Jacob Irey

Jacob Irey is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) at Grow Well Cleveland. He received a B.A. in Psychology and a Masters of Education in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Cleveland State University in 2018. Jacob has worked primarily with individuals who are homeless, low-income, marginalized, HIV+, LGBTQIA+, individuals with substance use disorders, trauma, and individuals with severe and persistent mental health disorders throughout his career.

Therapy/Counseling can be viewed as an opportunity for clients to explore parts of ourselves they may have forgotten, neglected, or just discovered. Tasks such as this can be uncomfortable, which is why there is special emphasis on building a collaborative relationship in which clients feel safe to be vulnerable without fear of judgement. The client and therapist are viewed as equals, fellow travelers along their paths in life.

Jacob utilizes Existential, Gestalt, and CBT therapies to aid clients in developing an awareness of themselves that allows clients to feel empowered, free, and to take responsibility for their lives in ways that feel authentic. Honest conversations with clients about the existential givens of freedom, isolation, meaninglessness, and death can offer new insights into how we “show up” in our lives. These approaches celebrate the client’s uniqueness as an individual, while acknowledging the limitations we all have without becoming negativistic.

Jacob has particular interest in working with the elderly and individuals suffering from chronic or terminal illnesses.
